“And His gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the Body of Christ.”
Eph 4:11-12
HOLY ORDERS
It is through Holy Orders that “the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time: thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry.” (CCC 1536)
Priesthood is conferred by the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The normal period of preparation is fours years of college and five years of theology. The Permanent Diaconate is open to married and single men who are at least 32 years old. Men who are ordained receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The term “permanent” means that a man is ordained a deacon for life, as opposed to the “transitional” deacon who becomes a priest.
